SALIVARY GLAND & PAROTID GLAND CANCER TREATMENT OVERVIEWS: ARTICLES, BOOK EXCERPTS & LINKS

Please note: We continue to build and add to this section of our website, as we are trying to be extremely comprehensive in this area. We may not have included every piece of material that we intend to, or that is out there. Please check back with us on your next visit, for more additions. Also, you may want to search medical journal sites, medical libraries and other online sources for additional material.

Citations are arranged in reverse chronological order, with most recent publications first. Links may reflect date we found them, rather than date they were posted, unless a publication date is given. A magnifying glass next to citation indicates selections we find more valuable or informative.

We have also attempted to highlight specific references to Acinic Cell Carcinoma within these citations.

Excerpts on treatment from a comprehensive overview of Salivary Gland Cancer, written for patients. We have found some of the material in the complete article to have a few inaccuracies, so this should not be your only source of information. However in general this easy-to-read material gives a good, informative and practical overview. We also recommend going to the ACS site directly for updates and revisions, as well as links and other services they offer.

Failure patterns and factors affecting prognosis of salivary gland carcinoma: retrospective study.

Department of Clinical Oncology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Med J 2000 Mar;6(1):29-36

A retrospective study to investigate the failure patterns and the prognostic factors following postoperative radiotherapy for salivary gland carcinoma. Cases of 50 patients in Hong Kong from 1984 through 1993 were reviewed. Conclusions: The N-stage is the main prognostic factor of overall survival, relapse- and metastasis-free recovery, and success of treatment. Optimal locoregional treatment can help reduce distant metastasis, and the maximal use of postoperative radiotherapy may contribute to improved locoregional control.

Relevant selected excerpts on Head and Neck Cancers from a major textbook/reference for health professionals. Detailed treatment recommendations and discussion, written for health professionals. Breakdown of treatment by individual site/location, as well as cancer type. Specific sections on most non-salivary gland cancer types have been excluded from these excerpts. We have also re-ordered sections to place more relevant material first. This citation provides a reliable overview, although material on acinic cell carcinoma is minimal, and not necessarily completely accurate.

A retrospective review of 133 patients with major salivary gland carcinomas treated between 1955 and 1981 is presented. Numerous results are given. Data indicates that complete surgical resection results in the best local control, with or without adjuvant radiation. When the surgical margin is inadequate and re-excision not possible, adjuvant radiation therapy appears to have a role to optimize local control and survival. Of note: Tumor-free interval was longest for patients with acinic cell and mucoepidermoid carcinomas.

Salivary gland malignant neoplasms: treatment and prognosis.

Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys; 12(5):747-54 1986

Retrospective analysis of 183 patients with malignant salivary gland tumors from 1955 to 1978. Analysis showed that radiation therapy lowered the recurrence rates after surgery and controlled approximately one-third of the inoperable tumors.

A retrospective on 271 patients with parotid carcinomas from 1958-1980. 21 patients had acinic cell carcinoma. Overall, parotid carcinoma patients treated with combined therapy had a 10-year relapse-free rate of 62% compared to 22% for those treated by surgery alone (p = 0.0005). See full text for more data.
